Why NOT weddings!!?

“So you’re a photographer?”

“Yes, I am!”  (said with great excitement and enthusiasm, because I absolutely LOVE what I do)

“So when are you starting with wedding photography?”

or

“I see you don’t have any weddings on your website, but can you please send me your wedding packages?”

or

“You’re really good at what you do, why are you not doing weddings?”

Some questions I usually get.

And then SOME…

“The real money is in wedding photography, you’ll see…”

“You’ll end up doing weddings sooner or later”

“You’re NOT a wedding photographer!?  Then WHAT are you?”

You see, I’m not bashing wedding photography at all, I admire all wedding photographers and I truly believe that what wedding photographers can do, is incredible!  I know some wonderfully talented wedding photographers (some even really close friends) who are absolutely super talented in their craft.

But, since being back in this beautiful country of ours, most people (not all though) that asked me about my photography used some, or all, of the above questions/statements…

Almost as if you’re not a real photographer if you don’t do weddings…

I’ve been a photographer for almost 3 years now, in Korea for 2 years and now 5 months in South Africa, taking on clients from all over the globe.  Never once in Korea did I get any wedding photography related questions from my peers or clients, I was a baby, kids and family photographer to them.

And it was a perfectly understood niche to be in, in the global community.

So naturally I was shocked when I got here and I started getting these requests and questions.  At first I really didn’t understand it, but now I do.

I’m not going to explain here the part I didn’t understand and now do understand, because it’s not what this post is really about.

But what I am going to say is that I don’t do weddings, because I really have no desire to do it.  And I have done weddings and one of my own where I was the main photographer, so it’s not something I JUST decided…

I do my lifestyle portrait photography, specialising in babies, children and families because this niche DOES excites me!  It gets me all teary eyed when I photograph a beautiful new baby, brings out the kid in me when I work with children, lets me appreciate my own family when I meet new families, makes me realise the miracle of being pregnant when I meet super excited pregnant moms!

And overall lets me see REAL life in a totally new light every time I meet my clients.

JUST this.

All of us have our reasons for doing what we do.

My reason why I chose NOT to do weddings is because I love real life, the ordinary, unscripted, sometimes the messy, imperfect parts…  And I know how to capture that part of life for my clients.

Sally Mann said it best.

Unless you photograph what you love,

you’re not going to make good art.
